Readings

The basic text is the three volume World Bank compilation:

Margaret E. Grosh and Paul Glewwe (eds.), Designing Household Survey Questionnaires for Developing Countries: Lessons from Fifteen Years of the Living Standards Measurement Study. Washington, The World Bank, 2000. This is available from the World Bank for students at a 20% discount. While still expensive, we will be reading 18 of the chapters and this is the only purchased text for the course.

We will also be reading three (free!) DHS publications:

We will also read parts of:

Grosh, Margaret E. and Juan Munoz. 1996. "A Manual for Planning and Implementing the LSMS Survey." Working paper, Washington, D.C.: World Bank, Living Standards Measurement Study, Number 126. Available as an Adobe pdf file (17.1 Mg).

You will need weekly access to the four main questionnaires we will be reviewing every week:

  1. The Human Development Profile of India (HDPI-I). Copies of the will be provided.
  2. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) The questionnaires can be read/downloaded as Adobe pdf files:
  3. The Living Standards Measurement Surveys (LSMS). questionnaires can be found in volume 3 of Grosh and Glewwe (see above).
  4. The 2001 Indian Census used only a two page form for each household plus one additional page for a household list. Copies will be provided.
