The effect of aspirations on status attainment

"You can achieve anything you want if you believe in yourself."

Cliches like the above claim that personal aspirations explain much of individual attainment. To put it in more sociological language: "Holding constant all other causes of individual attainment, aspirations have a strong effect on individual outcomes.
