Simple divisions of districts into two or more 1991 districts:

For the 1961-91 panel file, when there has been a simple division of an older district into two or more districts, we recreate the older district by adding up the totals of the new district. This requires no estimation although it yields a smaller number of cases.

1971 data:

  The following 1971 districts were summed together to recreate the original 1961 district:

Assam:	0408 =	Mikir Hills (1961 id=0407) + North Cochar Hills(0408)
Gujarat:	1017 =	Surat(1017) + Valsad(1018)
Himachal Pradesh:	1202 =	Kangra(1202) + Kuru(1204)
Jammu and Kashmir:	1313 =	Rajauri(1309) + Punch (1310)
Tamil Nadu:	2606 =	Dharmapuri(2605) + Salem(2606)

1981 data:

The following 1981 districts were summed together to recreate the original 1961 (and sometimes 1971) district:
