Changing industry definitions:

The 1961 census used a slightly different 9-industry division than the later censuses. More detailed 1961 industry data permitted us to re-calculate exactly what the counts would have been with the later definitions:

• Household industry workers in division 0 (livestock, orchards, etc.) and division 1 (mining) were subtracted from the household industry category and added to the appropriate division as in 1971 and 1981.
• Livestock and mining were combined in the 1961 abstract but were divided into the two groups as in 1971 and 1981.
• Business services and restaurants were subtracted from the other service category and added to Commerce as in 1971 and 1981.
